Idea

RecyGlo is a waste management platform that provides waste management, traceability, monitoring and analytics. At RecyGlo, the team is committed to providing environmentally friendly recycling solutions in ASEAN. We believe in promoting smart recycling habits, linked with new technology, to achieve long-lasting results. We strongly believe in a circular economy and are offering our clients a wide range of services and solutions to make the world a greener place.

Current Status

We have a working product, developed different services over the years and reached over 100 clients B2B in 2020 (including international schools, UN offices, embassies and some of the best-known FMCG companies).

Market

Our customers are companies, located in South-East Asia (for now), from medium to large size. We are working with enterprises from various industries, from tourism companies to large FMCG corporations. We are able to meet the needs of waste management in offices willing to ease their waste management systems, as well as industries looking for larger solutions to make their supply chain more efficient and monitor their waste. The Asia Pacific market for Waste Management represents $120 billion annually and keeps growing. This is unfortunate for the environment but allows us to seize an ever-growing opportunity: redirecting this large amount of waste to more sustainable places through segregation at sources (allowing a higher recycling rate) and working with our clients through training and reporting to help them reduce their waste production and its impact. Our services include audits, reporting, consulting activities (EPR, Social/Environmental Impact Assessments). There is a growing demand for these services as Asian governments implement more environmental laws and regulations. International companies willing to manufacture or operate in these countries need to meet the local requirements and we are able to provide them with the support needed to comply with them.

Problem or Opportunity

Waste and recycling are often overlooked by companies, innovations in these sectors are scarce, and we keep using the same methods over and over while knowing they are damaging for our planet. Trash is not fully considered (nor well-disposed of in most SEA countries) and companies don’t have the tools to evaluate it, monitor it and reduce it. Our platform enables companies to have a safe and efficient waste management system while transforming trash into valuable data, allowing them to make smarter, greener and cost-efficient decisions across their supply chain and in their offices.

We are also developing public-private partnerships through projects, helping cities and governments to find solutions to reduce, reuse or recycle their waste. Our goal is to support the development of smarter cities while helping the communities to understand the importance of waste and environmental preservation as a whole.

Solution (product or service)

Our waste management platform is for routing, scheduling, data entry and image recognition for scheduled and on-demand collection. The client receives a RecyGlo sustainability account where they can see key metrics and download the reports. We integrate the bills, the option to book additional services to allow our partners to manage waste at any scale. We operate as a link between recycling facilities and companies, creating value by transforming waste into data and comprehensive reports.

Competitors

We haven't identified any direct competitors in our markets so far. Some businesses offer composting services, but none is able to support customers in their waste journey from A to Z using as much tech and analytics as we do.
The existing alternatives are the city-operated waste streams and informal recyclers.

Advantages or differentiators

We have a complete platform, allowing our clients to do everything in one click! From asking for extra training for their employees to ordering an extra pickup for their waste, our system allows them to unite all their needs in one place. We are creating a higher rate of waste separation at source thanks to the implementation of our own bins, which city-led waste operators don't take into account, and collect any types of waste (organic, glass, plastic, metal,...) in order to simplify the processes of our clients.

By completely integrating data, we create value wh ere there isn't and allow our customers to think back and understand their own consumption. It allows them to take actions, reducing their impact on the planet and their costs! If they want to go further in their approach, we provide our consulting services to truly support them in their environmental effort.

Finance

As a truly circular economy platform, we are looking after revenue streams from all sides so nothing is wasted. We have our main revenue model, a B2B monthly subscription service for our enterprise clients (usually from $50 to $500 for companies, or based on the audit for larger clients). This fee covers training to the employees, installation of the bin system, entry & exit audits and monthly/quarterly reports on their waste.

We are also working with large international organizations (GIZ, ADB,...) to implement the specific project in the region. These projects are often led hand in hand by local governments and allow us to reach more people and support the development in Asia. We expect high growth in Sales in the next 5 years as we are now expanding internationally and opening our new office in Hanoi, Vietnam.

Business model

On top of our main business model, the B2B monthly subscription, we create extra revenue streams and use the waste produced by our clients to create new opportunities such as biofertilizer, plastic lumbers, recycled electronics parts, recycled paper notebooks,... We offer other services such as the consulting part or support for certifications on a contract-based price, and 360° solutions for larger corporations. In the future, we plan to transform plastic and other recyclables into raw materials to sell them in the market, creating a complete loop.
In Myanmar, we experienced a 30% MoM subscribers growth between 2018 (our first paying clients) and the last quarter of 2020.

Money will be spent on

We are expanding to Vietnam, a country producing more than 13 million tonnes of waste each year. The opportunity is huge, and to penetrate the market successfully, we want to be sure we have adequate means and support. The money will be used to create our operations there (truck and driver, analysis support), our own low-value plastic recycling factory and expand our capabilities.

We believe that an offer is something that we need to discuss, to meet both parties' needs. We are open to negotiation and would love to hear investors offers and feedback before making any decisions. We value transparency in both ways, and can share more about our investment plans and 5 years strategy during meeting.

Risks

Scaling up:
Our innovation is functioning and ready, we already explored the market and have paying clients. There is no common waste management system across South-East Asia, so our challenge to scale up would be not researching enough the markets we are penetrating and facing barriers to entry, such as nationalization of the waste management or intricate laws in countries where provinces are very autonomous.

Partnerships:
Finding reliable and safe recycling facilities can be a challenge, but with our ISO certifications and knowledge, we believe we can examine, audit and chose the right partners. At RecyGlo, we truly think partnerships and cooperation are the best way to grow and help other entrepreneurs or companies grow.

Political Crisis:
We have offices and operations based in Myanmar, where our two founders are from, and the extremely alarming and unstable situation there is a challenge itself. We want to make sure our new office in Vietnam will be able to grow quickly and steadily to be sure we can support the rest of the team, present in Myanmar. This international development plan has been accelerated by the crisis, as we believe the development will be the key to our success.

Incubation/Acceleration programs accomplishment

We got into the Phandeeyar Accelerator and earned pre-seed money in 2017 and received investment from Katapult Ocean to support the Green industry. In 2020 we received post-seed funding from Accelerating Asia. Today, we just received the news that we have been accepted into the Tech2impact Mentorship program, along with 30 other tech startups!
