Market

Approximately 5 to 10 percent of all children will stutter for some period in their life, lasting from a few weeks to several years. Boys are 2 to 3 times as likely to stutter as girls and, as they get older, this gender difference increases; the number of boys who continue to stutter is three to four times larger than the number of girls. Approximately 75 percent of children recover from stuttering. For the remaining 25 percent who continue to stutter, stuttering persists as a lifelong communication disorder.
More then 1% of world's population has lifelong stuttering disorder. It is more than 70 million people. Knowing that this number includes all forms of stuttering, we can cut that number by excluding mild stutterers and identify the target market of 40 million people.
Our primary markets will be the EU, US and Canada, and we will enter the UK and Germany markets first.

Problem or Opportunity

More than 70 million people worldwide stutter. Although the precise causes of stuttering are still unknown, most researchers now consider stuttering to be a neurological condition that interferes with the production of speech. Despite scientific breakthroughs in our knowledge about stuttering, there is still no reliable cure that works consistently, across time, and for all people who stutter.
One of the most difficult real life situations for people who stutter is simply – making a phone call. Using the phone is uncomfortable to many people, whether they stutter or not. For people who stutter, making a phone call causes a great deal of anguish, fear and stress. All these negative emotions induce phone call avoidance and can lead to more serious health problems such as social anxiety and depression.
A survey (n=70) conducted within the stuttering community suggests that all respondents (100%) rated their stuttering as more frequent in a telephone conversation than when stuttering in general. Furthermore, 70% of people who stutter want to buy our product, while 90% believe that a device that would help them make a phone call would increase their quality of life.
When making phone calls to strangers or people not close to them, the most common negative emotions people who stutter felt were anxiety, stress, fear and low self-esteem. When describing their unpleasant phone call experiences, common answers were: lack of understanding from the person on the other line, not being able to say their names, and being hung up on.

Solution (product or service)

Stuttering is primarily a communication and not a speech disorder. It occurs only when we talk to other people, sharing information and feelings; when we interact. Two studies* (n=1656) presented at the 2007 International Stuttering Association Congress in Croatia have shown that 89% of people who stutter speak completely or mostly fluently when not interacting with others; for example, speaking alone in a room. There are no speech repetitions, no blocks, no tensions. This amazing fact became the main starting point of this project.

Competitors

We have an underserved 30 billion dollar annual Market with poor competition that is all based on delayed auditory feedback principle that can improve fluency but is mostly ineffective in real-life situations and its positive effect wears off over time.

Advantages or differentiators

All available anti-stuttering devices and mobile apps on the market are based on the Delayed Auditory Feedback principle which can improve fluency but its positive effect wears off over time. Also, the DAF effect is usually ineffective in most speaking situations due to high levels of tension and anxiety.
Stuey has a unique and innovative method, and has been specifically developed to provide comfort to be effective in all phone calls, regardless of fear and anxiety. There is no device on the market that works on the same or similar principle as Stuey.
Furthermore, the device can be used in speech therapy to conquer the initial apprehension of making a phone call by combining recorded voice lines and learned speech techniques, and as a part of self-modelling treatment (a scientifically proven fact that listening to your fluent speech increases fluency).

Risks

Some of the speech therapists may not accept Stuey’s method as they still hold the thesis that people who stutter only need speech therapy.
