Biotic uses marine biomass to manufacture fully bio-based & biodegradable PHBV polymers, an optimal plastic alternative.
Current Status
We are currently in the process of two pilot projects targeting food packaging with fortune500 companies. We are in advanced discussions with consumer goods fortune500 companies for a pilot around single use plastic applications. Following our Food & Beverage and consumer goods pilots, we aim to target bio-medical, textile and wearable markets, and are already in early stage discussions with relevant corporate partners.
Problem or Opportunity
The plastic crisis and its harmful effects on every aspect of the planet needs no elaboration. Over 90% of the plastic that is used in the world ends up in landfills, incinerations or finds its way to our natural resources. This situation heavily affects the entire planet’s environmental systems. Increased consumer awareness led to a spike in demand for sustainable, cost effective alternatives, countries, cities & governments world-wide are enforcing new legislations and regulations banning disposable and single-use plastics.
Solution (product or service)
Biotic manufactures fully bio-based, fully biodegradable PHA polymers as commodities, using marine biomass as feedstock for our precise fermentation process, targeting to replace fossil-based plastics and eliminating recycling needs. The core process, using a stream of raw material from the pretreatment and separation of the macroalgae, includes a precise fermentation process, using saline/sea water, thus reducing energy cost (no treated water), and reducing chances of contamination. We apply metabolic engineering in order to increase yields and efficiencies, modify polymer characteristic.
Business model
Our business model includes 2 paths: Industrial scale facilities - constantly developing additional material type and manufacturing the bio-polymers as commodities as well as by products Sub-licensing the manufacturing capabilities to partners around the world to enable faster and greater reach to the market
