From consumers in the US to farmers in Kenya, we all depend on soil to grow our food and with +10% per capita food consumption. We transform crop waste into crop yield in farms in Kenya.
Current Status
We are coming from proving the concept in Ghana. First, we’ve conducted a pilot in Ghana with a low-tech mobile unit with a partner NGO: Obrobibini. Second, we did one sale and closed agreement of 5 preorders, and now we are pivoting to Kenya to scale operations.
Problem or Opportunity
In Kenya, the soil is sick and has decreased crops quantity and quality, having a direct impact on malnutrition, farmers' poverty, and climate change.
Burning your field is a quick way to clear farm waste and provide some nutrients to the soil, but in the long run, it degrades the land. Because of this, farmers' lands in Kenya are becoming less fertile and producing fewer crops. Fewer crops lead to lower incomes for the farmers to spend on expensive fertilizers, modern equipment, or sustainable farming techniques. Creating the vicious cycle of land degradation
Solution (product or service)
At biosorra we break the cycle. We transform crop waste into crop yield, producing a soil improver that is called biochar and mixing it with organic fertilizer. Biochar increases water and nutrient retention and improves microbial life, leading to overall healthier soil. Healthier soil in turn leads to an increase in crop yields. Up to 200% When crop yields increase, farmers can inject more food into their communities and more money into their pockets.
Business model
Instead of burning the crop waste to useless ash, our service starts by gathering crop residue already on the farmer’s land, and transforming it into biochar with a medium-tech kiln and selling the final product. We provide assistance to farming cooperatives on the application along their fields as they prepare for the next planting season.
Incubation/Acceleration programs accomplishment
We were in the accelerator program of the hultprize competition by the United Nations, being top 10/100.000 teams.
