Ottan is a green-tech company that develops circular materials to build the sustainable and delightful interiors of the future. We reduce resource consumption by upcycling food waste such as shells.
Current Status
At the moment we sell and send samples to every continent and receive 3-4 emails daily from design companies (decision makers) or directly B2B customers. We haven't even started marketing yet. This is all organic. 80% of the demand is from the UK, We have more than € 250K orders in line but we can’t approve because we still need a seed investment. Last week, we won the EMAAR innovation challenge and got a contract with the biggest customer for us in the world. We’re in their 50 year plan and this is something huge beside the others. Others are very interesting as well.
Problem or Opportunity
The problem is resource depletion. We are extracting 75% more natural resources than Earth can sustain and the housing industry has the largest share in material extraction with 40%. Also we’re wasting 1.3 billion tonnes of food annually and this equals to one third of total annual production. The reason behind the climate crisis is people are increasingly over-producing and over-consuming for a long time. This led to waste problems and resource depletion. Thus, we need to find a sustainable sourcing solution which doesn’t consume natural resources the way we know.
Solution (product or service)
Ottan has developed a technology to upcycle food and agricultural waste into bio-composite materials that can be used to produce products such as cladding panels, furniture, housewares, lightning and more... We see the value and the power of organic waste and think that they can be the new raw materials mostly for the building materials and furniture industries. Our solution is simple and highly scalable. We use fruit peels for furniture, nut shells for floor coverings and grass for acoustic wall panels.
Business model
We generate income by B2B selling the Ottan panels we produce. After upcycling the products entering our facility as waste into a material with high added value, we sell to architects, designers and engineers who are intermediaries for construction companies and global brands. Since low-cost waste or by-products are upcycled into quality and durable building materials, a significant income can be obtained here. In addition, we plan to generate income in this way through license agreements to be made in the future.
