Idea

BabyFM is a baby body fever (and frequency) monitor system consisting of a temperature sensor and app for mobile devices. It allows continued monitoring of the baby's body condition, medicine tracking, alerting, and reporting. BabyFM is a device with software aimed to register and track fever, HRV, and respiratory rate in babies and children from six months to six years old.

Current Status

The project is in the prototype stage.
Device is made for adult and lab testing. The software is in final phase of development. User interface is in design phase.
Clinical research is being prepared and will start soon.

Market

For the 1st phase: European MARKET
TAM – total available market – 4 million units per annum – Europe has around 450 million citizens and each year around 4 million babies are born.
SAM – serviceable available market - 0,8 M of units per annum – based on the fact that across nearly all European states, the 20 % of the population with the highest disposable incomes account for at least one-third of total income, while the 20 % of the population with the lowest incomes together account for less than one-tenth of all income. For our estimations, SAM refers to 20% of the population with new-borns with the highest disposable incomes or 0,8 million units per year. In order to be conservative, the usage of our product by adults is not counted.
SOM – serviceable obtainable market - 100 K units per annum - based on the fact that competition already exists (which is good for the promotion of the use of this type of product), our estimate is that 500k units of this product could be sold each year, with our market share which will rise from 10% (first two years) to 20% (target for 5th year of operation). It means, that our SOM varies from 50k units to 100k units.

Problem or Opportunity

All pediatric guidelines suggest axillary temperature measurement during child illness. Today, a digital thermometer is a gold standard.
But, nights with a baby's fever episodes have existed for the parents, and they usually feel stressed. The biggest problem we are trying to solve is accurate, continuous fever monitoring, which will result in maximum sleep for the parents. Also, the systems allow the therapy tracker in order not to avoid parents of mixing the therapies while they are dizzy. The functionality of parents the day after the fever episodes is the secondary aim, especially to the parents who have to work in the morning. Generated reports about temperature courses might be useful for the present in communication with pediatricians, which will improve the accuracy of the decision for further examination of treatment. Also, the system is applicable for the healthcare environment and monitoring of fever in several babies in parallel. BabyFM also overcoming problem for parents who needs communication via telemedicine, based in rural areas.

Solution (product or service)

This system (BabyFM) consists of the temperature sensors and the software for mobile devices. The temperature sensor is a high sensitivity sensor with precision <0.5ºC, and it is placed in a plastic flat thermo-conductive box with a 2cm diameter max. Max diameter is set to the device's battery size. Wearable band, similar to spine posture correctors, will be made of pure cotton and designed specifically for sensor box fixating in the axillary joint. The band can be washed after several fever episodes. A small pocket in-band on the side will be designed for sensor box placement. The sensor box can be ejected and placed easily. The cotton band will be resizable as a strap to adjust different child age categories.

1. Benefits for parents with babies and young children
BabyFM system's main purpose is to let the parents sleep and/or rest during the night and relax until the fever starts. BabyFM aims to guide parents on how to manage fever and drugs. The application gives suggestions regarding the medicine, alarms the interval between previous med applications and gives suggestions regarding other procedures (friction, shower…). Application, also, reminds parents for other medications that need to be given to the ill child. Parents are able to export fiver and medical reports and send it to the doctors or medical institutions. The application additionally learns the best pattern for child fever management and gives suggestions in the next illness fever episodes.
2. Benefits for healthcare systems could be found in reporting which is useful for telemedicine and cost reduction as well as in the implementation of the system directly in hospitals for the fever monitoring. Fever course is recorded and sent (or presented) as a chart which can be used by paediatricians which reduces physician workload in hospitals and improves telemedicine. This is especially helpful in settlements which are far from hospitals. Some diseases have specific fever patterns and it is possible to evaluate diagnosis based on fever patterns. Using machine learning techniques, fever patterns can be estimated and possible diagnosis might be suggested. This could be very significant in differential diagnosis. Second, implementation of the system in hospitals will be useful for controlling the temperature of the patients (babies and children) in real time. BabyFM allows healthcare workers to set up notification system, set up the roles of responsible healthcare workers for each patient to follow the data, patient conditions and report about it.
3. The Pharma industry could have a huge impact and benefit from the product development and its ecosystem. If the company produces the drugs for fever and temperature reduction as well as supplements for the immune system the product could be sold under the company brand with additional drugs. Also, ecosystems with paediatrician advice to the young parents, blog, and marketing section about the product and drug usage could improve the company brand.

Advantages or differentiators

Baby FM measures the temperature as the standard temperature measuring (axillar joint), but it has a mobile app for medication logs and alerts during the fever episode and notifications for drug intervals.
BabyFM could be installed on several devices (for the parent's supervision in case that children are with babysitters or grandparents).
The elastic band does not irritate the skin.
The Next-generation of devices will be able to measure the frequency of the heart rate, with an estimate of febrile convulsion occurrence.
