Idea

We manufacture high-quality soil improver products for local landscapers, farmers and home-gardeners struggling with sandy soils and limited water resources. We also design, build and operate bespoke organic waste recycling facilities for communities and businesses that are committed to sustainability.

Current Status

In 2017, we built the first composting pilot facility in KSA and since then we have been testing and improving our products and processes.
At this point, Edama is working on soil improver products and compost designed by plant science experts to improve the water-holding capacity and fertility of sandy soils types and supply the water-efficient hydroponic farming sector.

Problem or Opportunity

Our clients will be Saudi mega-projects, municipalities, autonomous zones, contractors, farms, universities, and many more.

65% of the waste in Saudi is organic, and most of it currently ends up in landfills, which produce potent greenhouse gases and leach dangerous chemicals into aquifers, and most landfills are expected to fill up in the next 5 years. Furthermore, desert agriculture is not very productive, and around 70% of freshwater resources go towards farming. In spite of this, only 40% of food is produced locally with the rest of it being imported.

Solution (product or service)

Edama soil improver products are made from organic waste are specifically geared towards improving desert agriculture productivity and reducing water consumption.

Competitors

There are no direct competitors in this market, and customers are currently not using any alternatives, which is resulting in farming being very unproductive.

Advantages or differentiators

Edama soil improver products are specifically targeted to desert agriculture unlike any other compost. Our systems are adapted to local environmental conditions and have been specifically designed to utilize abundant challenges feedstocks, such as palm fronds, which make it uniquely sustainable and able to adapt to a circular economy model.

Money will be spent on

Building a sustainable composting facility and expanding the business, accelerating the growth of the company as well as moving products that are currently in the research and development pipeline.

Invention/Patent

Our IP portfolio includes several trade secrets and know-how protecting recycling recipes, processes and products developed by Edama Organic Solutions.
These include details on:
Physical and chemical characterisation of organic waste materials, composts, soils and growth media- protocols, infrastructure, expertise and databases
Composting process parameter and performance monitoring - protocols, infrastructure, expertise and databases
Assessment of growth medium composition effects on plant performance and water efficiency - protocols, infrastructure, expertise and databases
A particularly interesting part of our IP portfolio is the treatment of palm waste which is a challenging waste material that is problematic to dispose of. Currently, it is either burned or landfilled. Instead, we developed a process to convert it into a hydroponic growth medium, drawing inspiration from a process that is used to turn coconut fibers into a similar product.
